Dot Cities
List
While
many of the world's greatest cities (and regions) have applied
for their own TLD, there are many omissions. Like Chicago, Bangkok,
Mumbai and Brisbane for instance. (Not sure about Beijing &
Shanghai, they may be among the Chinese IDNs.) If these domain
strings are successful, it is probable that many more cities will
apply for extensions in a later round which probably won't be
for a few years. Here is a list of the city/region domain strings:
.abudhabi
.alsace
.amsterdam

New City And Regional
Domains

There are
currently 280 country code TLDs like .de for Germany and .cn
for China. Given the large populations of such countries, it follows
that there is more pressure on the domain name system for meaningful
domain addresses in those areas. In China and India for example, around
a billion people potentially compete for domain names to build on. And
of course, it's the countries with large populations that also have
big cities.
Also, given
that the population of quite a few cities exceeds 10 million, it is
obvious that the populations of such cities far exceeds that of many
small countries. So logically, it follows that there is a powerful market
imperative for a wider choice of internet addresses in those areas.
It's all
about spectrum. Almost every meaningful dot com domain has now been
registered (with the exception of future trend domains). So options
are currently very limited, apart from paying large sums of money on
the domain name aftermarket.
The launch
of a range of .city domains will help alleviate this squeeze
by offering new options in some of the world's major financial centers,
like .london, .nyc and .sydney.
Administration
of the Dot City Domains
In general,
the new dot city (and dot region) domains will be administered by the
city authorities themselves. They are all expected to be open registries
(but with logical restrictions). Broadly speaking, the applications
will require domain applicants to either reside in the city or have
a demonstrable business or media presence there. There is also little
doubt that city authorities will act proactively to prevent criminals,
cyberbullies and fraudsters from utilizing the city domains.
There is
every reason to expect that these domain registries will be successful.
Each city will promote its TLD with the official backing of the administration,
giving the new domain strings instant authority and credibility. And
local media in each city is certain to widely publicize the new domains
and likely take advantage of it themselves.
It isn't
hard to imagine a London radio program using the domain Morning.london,
for example.
So to continue
using London as an example, there will soon be a mix of official, business
and private deployments of domains like the following on the web:
Tube.london
BritishMuseum.london
Harrods.london
JoeShmoe.london
Flowers.london
MarysFlowers.london
Council.london
FireBrigade.london
Weather.london
MetOffice.london
TV.london
Lloyds.london
Taxi.london
Sony.london
Heathrow.london
BuckinghamPalace.london
TrafalgarSquare.london
TrafalgarSquareGrocer.london
HighStreet.london
ArtGalleries.london
TheShard.london
SherlockHolmes.london
